Horizon Chase – New racer has OutRun in its blood

I’ve not played or downloaded many iOS games in the last 12 months but last week by pure luck I popped on to the App Store and came across one of the editors choice games “Horzon Chase”.

I read the game discription and editors notes below and decided to invest $3.99.

Here’s the game description below

For me Horizon Chase is a HD remake mix of OutRun and Virtua Racing. There are Ferrari’s,  colourful sky’s, beaches, palm trees and Coasts. As the graphics have a filled polygon style it also looks like a follow up to SEGA’s Virtua Racing.

The difference here is that Horizon Chase isn’t a Checkpoint to Checkpoint racer, it’s much more. There are new cars to unlock if you get Gold in races and getting into the top 3 will unlock a new track. To make it more challenging you need to collect fuel cans to be able to complete the full race laps and there are tokens to collect on track if you want to get a perfect score. The racing A.I is also challenging but very fair.

If you love OutRun  and you have an iPhone or iPad I recommend you check out the wonderful colourful racer.

Japanese OutRun Toy

Check out this Cool OutRun car toy only released in Japan. This is a vintage item that was released in a series of at least 17 items with other SEGA arcade inspired toys including Hang – On Bike and Thunderblade copter.

You might of noticed that the car isn’t a Ferrari  But a Lamborgini Countach which is kinda strange, but hey, for ยฅ500 the equivalent of $5 or ยฃ3 these were pretty cheap toys.

Installing Cannonball The OutRun Enhanced Engine to the JXD GAMEPAD

Cannonball is a re programmed and enhanced version of SEGA’s OutRun by Chris White

Ported to Android (WIP) by Tim Leader
You can download the Android port at the link below

Below is the additional 15 stage continuous mode rolling through intro mode including in car view. I’ve shortened each stage to make it a 3 minute video. On 15 Stage continuous mode there is no fork in the road, the stages blend together and the music tracks play back to back.

Here’s how to install Cannonball to your JXD GAMEPAD

1. Download the .APK file to your JXD / ANDROID device from the link above.

2. Find the Cannonball.apk file on your JXD using the APKinstaller app that came with the JXD.

3.Select Install using the APKinstaller app.

4.install the file to your device.

5.Open the APKinstaller again and select ‘Manage’

6.Select the Cannonball file and select Export to create a Cannonball app Icon on your home screen.

Recent OutRun pick up

Just thought I would share my recent OutRun item that I picked up at Auction.
It’s a 1986 SEGA game card from the 24th Amusement Show in Japan.

This show was where SEGA first showed OutRun to the press and public and the card could be dispensed from a vending machine and used from credits within the SEGA stand.

Here’s a write up from a while back HERE

Custom Built OutRun Testarossa by Vic Veinz

We’ve seen a few excellent custom OutRun models before but this is a first for custom poseable figures.
IMG_0779.JPG

Vic has used pieces from various other figures to create these custom OutRun characters. Alberto the driver of the ferrari was made with Wolverine arms. His face and head from Daredevil with painted black glasses . Clarissa uses parts from Street Fighter 2’s Cammy and other figures.

The Ferrari is a 1:12 scale Testarossa kit by Monogram. The car was modified into a convertible by cutting off the top half.

SEGA Joy Joy Magazine May 1987 issue No 10

I think SEGA released this as part of a series of game catalogues for the Mark III. Each one would feature new release games and include the current catalogue of games available.
I really love the Japanese artwork on these catalogues.

SEGA Papercraft Arcade Machines

Here’s a really awesome Papercraft OutRun model from a Japanese SEGA fan. Originally posted by ใ‚ฏใƒซใƒใƒฃ.

…there’s also Space Harrier, don’t they look great together.

IMG_2699.JPG

The first time I saw these I thought that they were immaculate original arcade machines and not paper models!

They look excellent with the female figurines housed in the cabinets.

The model creator has been selling these amazing pieces for ยฅ1000 ($10AU)

3DS receives another great SEGA classic

Out in Japan this week through the Nintendo eShop is M2 and SEGA’s classic helicopter sprite scaler Thunderblade.

IMG_2715.JPG
Thunderblade is the 13th 3D release and we’ve not seen this game released on a console since the late 80’s / early 90’s.

Through Google Translate it seems that Yosuke Okunari (SEGA 3D project leader) has indicated this may be the last 3D release of the second wave of games. The 2nd wave included Afterburner, OutRun and also Fantasy Zone I & II.

Here’s a great line up of the original arcades that have had the 3DS treatment.

Hopefully this means that Europe, Australia and the U.S get the the second wave announced in the next few months.
