LAI SEGA OutRun Restoration Update 5

3 months have gone by since my last restoration update when I had the side art printed but there’s been plenty going on in the background so here goes….

More work and time has been put into repairing the cabinet, I’m finally happy with it and it’s painted ready for the side art. This is planned to be applied in the next few weeks.

3 locks have been fitted and all doors are repaired. Foot plates have been polished up too.

The steering mech has had further assembly and this has now been fitted to the freshly painted wooden control panel.

More updates soon …

LAI OutRun Restoration Artwork

Today I’ve received from a graphic designer redrawn side art for the OutRun resto project. As it was for just for personal use and not for business he did the work for free, so thank you Alfonso, top man.

Originally I was given totally redrawn side art from an OutRun buddy called David in the UK. He had paid to have it painstakingly recreated after not being happy with the poor mirrored side art you can pick up online.

The Australian machine has a curved section at the rear of the cab whereas the uk version goes straight down. I took photos and measurements of the curve and had the artwork modified. (Above you can see a curved area now at the rear just above the road)

The Australian machine also has the manufacturers logo on the side art so I had this added too like the original. You can see this below in the photo (Just below the seagul)

I plan to get the artwork printed out in April.

Please note- as this artwork was gift and had been expensively recreated and paid for by a friend in the UK plus modifications have been carried out in good will not to sell it I have been asked not to share it or have it reprinted. I respect this request so please do not contact me to get a copy, request a print or request to pay me for a set as I wont do this or answer requests on the subject.

SEGA LAI OutRun Restoration update

Yesterday I received a parcel of more parts from the U.K this time. A fellow OutRun restorer and amazing OutRun buddy (I won’t mention his name so he doesn’t get hounded by people) was very kind to send me this awesome parcel below.
It contained various decals, SEGA security screws, wire harness clip, complete gear shifter and a custom chrome plated accelerator pedal. (And the OutRun mug minus the tea) which was a nice surprise ๐Ÿ˜„

A huge thank you mate (you know who you are) this will be a big help in making the OutRun dream come true!โ€จ

Most of us will know the electro music artist Kavinsky is a big fan of OutRun the arcade game, after all he named his first music album OutRun and owns some pretty sweet signed merchandise by Yu Suzuki.

So from time to time fans will create OutRun inspired art. Check out this cool .gif animation below.

SEGA OutRun LAI Restore

Tonight I’ve managed to hit a milestone and complete the restore of the steering  mechanics of my Australian OutRun machine.

On and off its taken 3 months from start to finish, jet washing, cleaning, polishing, researching, ordering parts, more polishing and greasing.

Looking back to what it was originally like is quite an eye opener now, the effort, moskito bites and sweat has paid off.

Awesome Mini OutRun Cabinet

Check out this cool looking mini arcade machine with SEGA Outrun artwork. Who wouldn’t want one of these.

We’ve seen a couple of really cool minis in the past from Steve Carpenter using the GBA SEGA Arcade Gallery and one from mini arcade extraordinaire Luchio. You can fun both of these within the sites past News.

Happy 29th Birthday OutRun

Today was a strange day. 2 weeks ago a friend made me aware of an Australian OutRun machine for sale in Melbourne Victoria. I’ve been looking out for a machine for several years and they are few and far between in Australia.

Today I finally became the owner of a Leisure and Allied Industries licences SEGA OutRun and it happen to fall on OutRun’s 29th Birthday. How weird!

This is going to probably be a long term project to get the machine how I want it. I will use this Blog to document the challenge and restoration of the machine so it will hopefully help others who want to do a machine in the future. I am excited to study this Australian version and share the differences from an OutRun that came from my original country England.

Horizon Chase – New racer has OutRun in its blood

I’ve not played or downloaded many iOS games in the last 12 months but last week by pure luck I popped on to the App Store and came across one of the editors choice games “Horzon Chase”.

I read the game discription and editors notes below and decided to invest $3.99.

Here’s the game description below

For me Horizon Chase is a HD remake mix of OutRun and Virtua Racing. There are Ferrari’s,  colourful sky’s, beaches, palm trees and Coasts. As the graphics have a filled polygon style it also looks like a follow up to SEGA’s Virtua Racing.

The difference here is that Horizon Chase isn’t a Checkpoint to Checkpoint racer, it’s much more. There are new cars to unlock if you get Gold in races and getting into the top 3 will unlock a new track. To make it more challenging you need to collect fuel cans to be able to complete the full race laps and there are tokens to collect on track if you want to get a perfect score. The racing A.I is also challenging but very fair.

If you love OutRun  and you have an iPhone or iPad I recommend you check out the wonderful colourful racer.

OutRun features in 3D Thunderblade end credits

Thunderblade is probably one of the lesser loved games during the SEGA Super Scaler era but M2 have done a great job of the game and during the end credits there are many homages to classic SEGA games and characters.

OutRun is featured several times and below are a few fun OutRun clips to share.
Congratulations!
