Thunderblade is probably one of the lesser loved games during the SEGA Super Scaler era but M2 have done a great job of the game and during the end credits there are many homages to classic SEGA games and characters.

Last week finally saw the release of 3D OutRun in Australia after a long and painful wait, luckily we also got Thunderblade and the two Fantasy Zone game on the same day. Obviously I downloaded them all as soon as I was near a Wi-Fi point.
Below is my impression of the game after having it for a week.
I like the icon and the OutRun music sample when you hover over the selection. The 3D rotating model of the deluxe cabinet is wonderful.

I had a play around in the options and tried out the different screen settings for playing the game. This includes adjustment to the screen size and moving HUD. I’ve enjoyed playing games like Afterburner with the screen bezel visible but with OutRun Ive found the options below have been my personal choice.
I didn’t like having the bezel visible as it made the play area look to compressed and gave a poor car image resolution. Same goes for having a moving cabinet. Right now Widescreen mode with” HUD OFF” seemed the best option.
What is everyone else’s thoughts on this?
Within a week of playing I had completed the game across all Goals A – E which will unlock “Arcade” mode. Arcade mode runs at 50fps like the original where as “Special” runs at 60fps with enhanced coding removing some of the sprite issues etc of the original. (Like the improvements Chris White has made during his OutRun Canonball project)
Having completed all Goals within a week I’ve found the default settings perhaps easier than the arcade. I would up the difficulty if you are going to download it.
There are 2 new music tracks and I being a fan of the original music I was a little skeptical, but I have been converted, these new tracks are a beautiful extension to the OutRun experience…….I’ve only really played the game with the new tracks in the first week of play. They really are great and are really just a variation to the original three.
M2 have done a great job with this conversion, I’m a huge OutRun fan and I was gutted that the Testerossa was going to be replaced but one week in I no longer care…it’s still OutRun, OutRun portable, that you can take anywhere and it great!
There are a few other extras that are unlocked when you complete a Goal like collision slowdown reduction, no skidding etc. These all have their own leaderboards. I’ve not played these variations as yet as I’m a purist but it will no doubt add some long term play factor to the game.
I love 3D OutRun and I think I will keep this for ever! What you experience of the game? Please comment below and let me know your thoughts.
Great news for Aussie OutRun fans, The Australian Classification Board have now rated the remaining 3D SEGA games by M2 including OutRun, Thunderblade and Fantazy Zone 1 & 2.
At this stage there is no release date but it’s a step closer in the process for these games getting an Australian release. As soon as a release date is available I will let everyone know.

It’s sad news for Aussies hoping to get their hands on SEGA’s 3D games that were coming to the 3DS as I’ve just received news from SEGA through Twitter that Fantasy Zone and other 3D games including OutRun have been delayed with no release dates as yet.

The good news is that at least SEGA have given us in Australia an update as up to now we’ve been scratching our heads as to why Fantasy Zone didn’t appear last month.
Let’s hope OutRun and the other Wave 2 games from this series don’t take to long to come out as the wait is killing me.
I received a new poster today from Japan, the advertising poster for the forthcoming 3DS SEGA release of 3D Classics Collection.
I am a big fan of the art style of this poster including OutRun, Space Harrier, Bare Knuckle, Super Shinobi 2, Fantasy Zone and Ecco.
Although this retail ‘Reprint Collection’ which includes Space Harrier 3D and OutRun 3D as a bonus is currently only heading to Japan we have recently had the great news of the second wave of games coming to the West. Let’s also hope for this compilation to arrive with the stunning artwork by Ken Sugimori of Pokemon fame.
Today I woke up to a few messages from Damion Littlewood and Instagram buddy Kusanagi765 that while us in Australia were sleeping news had broke the SEGA had announced the second wave of 3D Classics would be released outside of Japan.
Current news is light but so far it’s been mentioned that Afterburner will be the first game released and each month a further game will be released. This is planned for early 2015.
The first wave games appeared almost weekly so we will just have to wait and see.
SEGA have released some promotional items and a video for the up coming release of their compilation of previously downloadable 3DS retro games.

Still no news on OutRun being released outside of Japan yet…. Here’s hoping for a pre Christmas release date.
SEGA Japan have just announced a retail release of some of there 3D SEGA Classic range on the 18/12/14.

This retail version includes OutRun, Space Harrier, Fantasy Zone, Super Shinobi II, Bare Knuckle and Ecco the Dolphin.
There will also be 2 bonus games including the Master System versions of Space Harrier 3D and OutRun 3D.
Out in Japan this week through the Nintendo eShop is M2 and SEGA’s classic helicopter sprite scaler Thunderblade.
Thunderblade is the 13th 3D release and we’ve not seen this game released on a console since the late 80’s / early 90’s.
Through Google Translate it seems that Yosuke Okunari (SEGA 3D project leader) has indicated this may be the last 3D release of the second wave of games. The 2nd wave included Afterburner, OutRun and also Fantasy Zone I & II.
Here’s a great line up of the original arcades that have had the 3DS treatment.
Hopefully this means that Europe, Australia and the U.S get the the second wave announced in the next few months.

Here’s some nice photos of SEGA Japan’s own OutRun Deluxe cabinet.
This was pulled out of the Warehouse to be used as a reference and to record the machine cabinet sounds for the 3DS conversion. It’s an option on the 3DS version to have ‘cabinet sounds on’ when playing the game.
Wouldn’t it be awesome to own a Deluxe cabinet in this condition ๐
